A few notes on Unscored

Unscored began as a small collection of demo recordings for a film. Though I ended up not working on that specific film, it inspired a vision about an overall sound, and gave me some specific ideas I wanted to explore. The musical tinkering that followed turned into the songs you hear on the album. Had I ended up working on the film, this music would likely have taken a different direction. Happy accidents are always exciting.

Living in a world where we are constantly asked what something “is” or what it “sounds like” leads us to pigeonhole work that might not fit into a specific category. My response to those questions is this:

Unscored is my homage to the feeling of becoming lost in the middle distance. It is a musical companion for riding bikes, climbing trees, playing in the ocean, noticing the clouds changing shape, sailing in boats, flying kites, taking in sunsets, watching fireworks, going for walks, holding hands, and counting stars. It is music for those who enjoy sitting quietly on a hill listening to the wind blow while kids grow up.

My friend Levi Agee, who created the incredible cover art for the album, described it as “…a specific type of cinematic music that feels like it scores my life at different points.”

Please feel free to put the album on and immediately start doing something besides listening to it. Notice when you come back to the music and how it works its way into what you are doing. My hope is that the listener finds Unscored to be an album about the subtle power that music and sound can have on a person’s perspective.
